An author visit can be an illuminating experience for students. When they meet the person behind the stories they’ve been reading, it reinforces the idea that they, too, can write stories.
I have three basic hour-long presentations, all of which I can modify to suit the needs of specific language arts units. Please feel free to request a tailor-made presentation.
Basic Presentations
1. For Grades 7, 8 and up – A discussion of how a writer creates a history-based story using A Question of Loyalty (Scholastic), set in Upper Canada during the Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837. This book is often used in connection with social studies units on the rebellion.
2. For Grades 3,4,5,6 – A discussion about how stories work using The Last Safe House and Gold Rush Fever. This will also fit into a study unit on the Underground Railroad.
3. For Grade 3 – A look at the life of children in pioneer times using A Pioneer Story: The Daily Life of a Canadian Family in 1840. This fits into the pioneer unit studied in Grade 3.
